Canine massage can be beneficial for all dogs but especially those with musculoskeletal conditions, and can improve pain control and mobility. It is a non-invasive holistic therapy, and can support dogs with a wide range of conditions as well as dogs who work and need to be at peak performance. As a complimentary therapy it should always work alongside Veterinary advice.
Massage Therapy can help with the following:
- Optimising performance and reducing risk of injury in working & sporting dogs (Pre/Post Event Massage)
- Relaxation/Reduce stress and anxiety
- OCD in dogs
- Pain management
- Pain related behavioural changes
- Gait & Postural changes
It can also be helpful supporting osteoarthritis and orthopaedic issues such as:
- Cruciate ligament injury
- Spondylosis
- Hip Dysplasia
- Elbow Dysplasia
- Luxating Patella
- Intermittent lameness
Massages will be undertaken in the pet owner’s home. A quiet room with a flat dog bed or blanket is required. There should be no disturbances from other pets or people during the session. This ensures a relaxing and calm environment for your dog. Sessions generally last for 1 hour (first session has an additional 30 minute for pre-assessment). The first client consultation is about getting to know the dog; there is a full gait analysis and discussion with the owner about the dog’s day to day living. Palpation is then completed to do a final assessment of the dog’s temperature, texture, tenderness and tension before beginning the massage. I aim to improve your dog in 1-3 sessions. Follow up maintenance massages may then be advised, depending on your dog's needs.
Each dog is approached as an individual and I will work with them and what they are comfortable with. Your dog may want to get up and stretch, go outside to toilet or have a drink during treatment sessions, this is normal and helps keep your dog relaxed and at ease. Your dog should not feel tense nor restricted at any time.
I work according to the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. This means by working professionally alongside your Vet we can work together to understand any any health concerns your dog has/may have and proceed to share information of any findings I make during massage. This ensures that your dog's health and wellbeing is always first and foremost.
To do this I ask that your Vet signs our 'Owner & Vet form'. They will then either return to you or send directly to me. Your Vet usually won't require to see your dog should there not be any health concerns and has had regular health checks, but in some cases your Vet may request to see your dog beforehand.
I will always refer a dog to its Vet should I be concerned about any underlying health issues.
